On a day when most people sit at home watching football (Super Bowl 41) I set out to learn more about a place called SCRAP a place for artists, teachers and all around crafty people. The first thing I noticed as I walked out my door was the unusually warm February weather. Just before crossing Interstate Blvd. I was shocked to see a long time fixture on the street being demolished.
Marino's Furniture with the upside down sign had been there as long as I could remember, and probably years before I was born. The odd thing about the store was that it was never open, price of bactrim. "By appointment only" the sign in the window read and beyond the windows were odd varieties of furniture and nick-nacks. A few months ago around Halloween they were selling what seemed to be a used (or at least stained) coffin.
Now all that was left of Marino's was a large heap of wood an broken glass. Next to the old furniture store was a 1920's foursquare house that had been abandoned for years, and was in the processed of being demolished. As I approached the corner the

It was painful to watch the death of this building, but fascinating like a car wreck scene where you can't look away. There is a plaque at the bottom of the pedestrian overpass that explains who Mr. Failing was, I can never remember, but I'm glad it was named for a pioneering person rather than the outcome of the neighborhood.

SCRAP fits right in to its surroundings with a bright mural on the front, and inside things just get crazier. So what is SCRAP. Inside its doors are a plethora of stuff that has the potential to be made into a piece of art. The goal of SCRAP is to provide discounted castoff, remnant and scrap materials to artists, educators, and the community, inform people, and change behavior toward resource conservation while diverting thousands (60,000) pounds of materials from the solid waste stream each year.
I spent over an hour at SCRAP combing through the aisles of stuff: tile, fabric, zippers buttons. Fortunately there are many projects that employees or volunteers have made to inspire people, like these lovely reworked trophies.
There is also a workspace inside SCRAP where you can sit and create things at your leisure. A variety of classes are offered each month where you can learn how to make new journals from old books or messenger bags made from Floppy disks.
They also offer great links on their website to other great community recycling and reuse programs like the ReBuilding Center, the largest non-profit used building materials resource in North America, and the North Portland Tool Library which loans a vast array of tools to local residents free of
charge, so they can make improvements on their homes. All of these resources promote community awareness of recycling and reducing our
negative impact on the environment, price of bactrim.
On my way home I saw that the house had completely been demolished. Only a few corners of the roof were still recognizable. A pink claw foot bathtub sat upside down, sandwiched between the wood and rubble. Order bactrim, I couldn't help but wonder if the bathtub would have a new life at the ReBuilding Center. In the past few years there have been many new building projects, old lots become new buildings, restaurants and shops, but what I love about this neighborhood are the many crafty creative people, people who are thinking about the cause and effect of their actions, and people who know how to integrate the old and the new.
