Today, my husband John, and I went to the Hot Shops Art Center for their annual Open House. We got there just as it opened at noon and stayed until 4pm - we didn't take any kids! It comes in handy that our teenager can watch our toddler! We had so much fun. John spent the entire time with the blacksmiths at the forge, and I made my rounds through most of the 3 stories of shops.
The Hot Shops Art Center celebrates two open houses annually, held on the first weekend of May and December. One of their biggest events of the year is the open house that I attended today. They featured informative art demonstrations and live music--numerous artists had their studio doors open to the public.

I introduced myself to many artists, and I even ran into one America Creates newest artists, Dia Hilton! I knew several of the artists and I feel that I really connected with most of the others too. It was so much fun sharing my excitement. All but one person seemed genuinely pleased with what we are doing. I think that's just amazing! I can't wait to talk with everyone again and send them my personal invitation to get their pre-registration in!
One of my favorite artists to go see each year at this event is Thomas Thomas, in Studio 105. That really is his name! He makes the most incredibly unique wooden animals! They're HUGE and so amazing! His wife, Jean was so nice! She remembers us from previous years, and she was very receptive to what we are doing! I didn't have long to chat with each artist, as this was a very busy event, but I plan on returning very soon and will have more leisurely conversations then.
I walked into one studio and one of the artists recognized me from JUNIOIR HIGH! She was one of my instructors! Her name is Caroline Schmitz. She is an Artist and an Educator. Her specialty is ceramics and sculptures. She and her studio-roommate Carole Debuse, teach at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Carole Debuse's business is called Dancin' Horse Designs.
Another artist that I enjoy talking to for the past few years at this event is a Woodturning Designer. His name is Kelly Bissell. He had some of the most amazing turned pieces that I've ever seen. I especially liked the big thick bowl made of Osage Orange! Not your typical bowl! As I arrived at his booth, I caught the tail end of an ongoing conversation with a customer. Kelly was saying how fast a small mistake can lead to a piece just blowing up. Then he said to that person something like, If you're not blowing things up, then you're not trying! It struck a familiar chord with me. Earlier this very afternoon, my husband and I watched the movie Meet the Robinson's. In the movie there was a part where one character says, "From Failing you learn, from success not so much". Their messages were the same. I recommend the movie, very funny and family friendly! We had a great conversation and I do believe that Kelly will be part of our community too!
We had such a great time at the Omaha Hot Shops Art Center's open house. John played and I worked, which was just like play, and I was able to spread the word to so many really talented artists and educators.
