On a day when most people sit at home watching football (Super Bowl 41) I set out to learn more about a place called SCRAP a place for artists, teachers and all around crafty people. The first thing I noticed as I walked out my door was the unusually warm February weather. Just before crossing Interstate Blvd. I was shocked to see a long time fixture on the street being demolished.

Marino's Furniture with the upside down sign had been there as long as I could remember, and probably years before I was born. The odd thing about the store was that it was never open, price of bactrim. "By appointment only" the sign in the window read and beyond the windows were odd varieties of furniture and nick-nacks. A few months ago around Halloween they were selling what seemed to be a used (or at least stained) coffin.
Now all that was left of Marino's was a large heap of wood an broken glass. Next to the old furniture store was a 1920's foursquare house that had been abandoned for years, and was in the processed of being demolished. As I approached the corner the
house was being opened up by a large Backhoe. Price of bactrim, Three interior levels of the house were exposed to the open air, their pink walls and a closet with clothing still inside. I made my way around the corner by the Polish church, service had let out and people were still casually socializing, smoking enjoying the weather. Past the church and down an alley I had never noticed before a few families stood watching the Half House being demolished from a different angle.
It was painful to watch the death of this building, but fascinating like a car wreck scene where you can't look away. As I was leaving one of the parents was trying to explain to her 4 year old daughter what they were doing to the house. "They are taking it apart", price of bactrim. Cheap bactrim online without prescription, Walking away I felt sad for that old house. Whenever I had passed it I always thought some brave person might buy it and fix it up, now there was little hope for it.
Such a strange thing to happen upon.. Soon I was walking up the stairs and onto the freeway overpass. Price of bactrim, When I first became familiar with this area of North Portland I would always laugh at this sign on the overpass from the freeway because before the overpass was completed it was just two walkways on either side of the freeway that cut off abruptly with a big sign in the middle that read "Failing Pedestrian Bridge". From the bridge you can see downtown Portland in the distance. There is a plaque at the bottom of the pedestrian overpass that explains who Mr. Failing was, I can never remember, but I'm glad it was named for a pioneering person rather than the outcome of the neighborhood.

Up Failing street I noticed some artistic Graffiti, bactrim discount. You can find many brightly painted houses, wild gardens and interesting garden art in this neighborhood, price of bactrim.
SCRAP fits right in to its surroundings with a bright mural on the front, and inside things just get crazier. So what is SCRAP. "The School and Community Reuse Action Project--is a 501(c)(3) non-profit and our mission is to promote creative reuse and environmentally sustainable behavior by providing educational programs and affordable materials to the community." Visit SCRAP's website at http://www.scrapaction.org/, Tennessee TN Tenn..
Inside its doors are a plethora of stuff that has the potential to be made into a piece of art. Price of bactrim, There are carpet tiles, fabric, string, greeting cards, keys from keyboards, frames, matte board, ceramic tile, memory foam pieces, corks, note pads, bumper stickers, vinyl letters and much more. The goal of SCRAP is to provide discounted castoff, remnant and scrap materials to artists, educators, and the community, inform people, and change behavior toward resource conservation while diverting thousands (60,000) pounds of materials from the solid waste stream each year.
I spent over an hour at SCRAP combing through the aisles of stuff: tile, fabric, zippers buttons. Fortunately there are many projects that employees or volunteers have made to inspire people, like these lovely reworked trophies.
There is also a workspace inside SCRAP where you can sit and create things at your leisure. A variety of classes are offered each month where you can learn how to make new journals from old books or messenger bags made from Floppy disks.
They also offer great links on their website to other great community recycling and reuse programs like the ReBuilding Center, the largest non-profit used building materials resource in North America, and the North Portland Tool Library which loans a vast array of tools to local residents free of
charge, so they can make improvements on their homes. All of these resources promote community awareness of recycling and reducing our
negative impact on the environment, price of bactrim.

On my way home I saw that the house had completely been demolished. Only a few corners of the roof were still recognizable. A pink claw foot bathtub sat upside down, sandwiched between the wood and rubble. Order bactrim, I couldn't help but wonder if the bathtub would have a new life at the ReBuilding Center. In the past few years there have been many new building projects, old lots become new buildings, restaurants and shops, but what I love about this neighborhood are the many crafty creative people, people who are thinking about the cause and effect of their actions, and people who know how to integrate the old and the new.

Would it be possible for us to receive a copy of the photo showing the tractor clawing away at the house? It is a great illustration for us of what not to do and to demonstrate how often materials go to waste instead of being deconstructed for reuse.
FYI, The ReBuilding Center also has a service that is a sustainable alternative to demolition, DeConstruction Services. As new development requires the removal of more and more old structures, DeConstruction Services is making it their goal to keep as much of this material as possible from entering the waste stream. A skilled team takes buildings apart by hand and prepares the lumber and other materials to be reused by the client or by the public through The ReBuilding Center.
An average 2,000 square foot home, if deconstructed instead of demolished, will prevent the harvest of 33 mature trees. Opting for deconstruction will provide 38 more worker days at a living wage than would demolition. We employ up to 30 people at a time on our DeConstruction Services teams.
Thanks for mentioning The ReBuilding Center in your article!
